A working knowledge of ARTICULATION: presentation of the phonemes (sounds) of the English language: 19 vowels and 25 consonants.

A detailed analysis of those significant vocalic and consonant sounds (or phonemes) for Spanish, Catalan, and French speakers. Place and manner of articulation.

A fundamental, practical knowledge of the ‘big’ 3’s in our method: STRESS, RHYTHM, and INTONATION.

Stress: word and sentence stress. Main stress. Secondary stress. Stress in compound words. Stress patterns. Emphasis and Contrast.

Rhythm of the language. Patterns in Rhythm.

Intonation patterns. The rising, the falling and falling-rising intonation. Intonation and Emotions.

English Pronunciation contrasted to other languages: Spanish, Catalan, and French.

An Introduction to phonemic symbols (eg./Ɵ/ for th in ‘thought’ ) with selected exercises to recognize them. Uses and benefits.

Hi, I’m Anna!

I’m a teacher of Oral Skills and Pronunciation in English from Spain with a passion for teaching and learning languages. In fact, at home both my husband and I are polyglots with different backgrounds (Italian, Canadian, Swiss, Argentinian, Catalan and Spanish) so you can imagine the cocktail of languages we can come up with 😉)

As a teacher, I’ve been in this profession since I was very young. In fact, I studied and graduated from a Teachers’ Training College in Buenos Aires where I found my love for Phonetics, Phonology and British and American History and Literature. There, I received my first intensive Phonetics’ training in a laboratory -called simply, ‘the lab’. Mind you, back in the 80’s there were cassette-tapes, not mp3’s or smart phones!

The results of my British RP accent training became evident years later: I got invited to the houses of Parliament and I could see -from the journalists’ exclusive section- a live session in the House of Commons! I felt hugely empowered and grateful to have worked for years in my pronunciation and British culture. This sense of achievement gave me the idea to teach and focus my courses on Pronunciation ever since. With a solid, cultural background.

Fifteen years ago, in Catalonia, I came across the Verbo-Tonal Method for the teaching and correction of pronunciation. I had an intense week of just listening and speaking Chinese Mandarin. Not a single word written. I could understand the teacher from the context: some images, his gestures, his facial expression. And I learnt. At the end of that week, I could come up with simple phrases for daily survival. I could even build a simple dialogue with a stranger. Amazing. After experiencing the benefits of learning a new language with the VT Method I took that path. I implemented many of its techniques in my classes and this is what I offer to you today.
